I recently realized how often I say "by the way" right before I'm about to say something that has nothing to do with whatever we've been talking about.
Bob: "Hey did you see that new movie this weekend?"
Me: "No, not yet. Hey, by the way, what did you think of that lecture yesterday?"
Oh well, nobody seems to call me on it.

"By the way?" Well... It really comes down to geographical location and demographics... I mean... what is the "the way" anyway? Does it constitute a small path, a road, a freeway, or the information super highway? We say "by the way" because we talk about things that are supposedly related, or "along the same path" ... Well... all things can be related. If you involve the internet... anything goes. Example... "Hey, did you see that movie this weekend?"
-"No, I didn't. By the way, they're towing your car."
In this more literal usage, they really are towing his car.... "by-the-way", "way" as in the road.
Or, in another example: "Hey did you see that movie this weekend?"
-"No, I didn't. By the way, I hate your guts."
It was a horror film... He didn't see it because it contained explicit shots of people with their guts hanging out... so still applies. It can be related.
Conclusion: What I call the Kevin Bacon theory... (all can be traced back to movies with Kevin Bacon), and thus "by the way" can always be used as a segue for conversation. Some people are just quicker at finding the connection than others. And that, by the way, is a perfect example of why I need to find a hobby.
Hi. You're hotlinking to that image on my server. Please feel free to use the image itself, but upload it to your own blogger instead of linking to it on my site. Thanks.
